A DINING ALONE SYSTEM that provides a COZY ENVIRONMENT and an INDIVIDUASPACE

Using CULTURAL ELEMENTS to REDUCE solo diners' HOMESICKNESS.

FIELD TRIP IN JAPAN

—ICHIRAN MANAGER INTERVIEW

Nonuto Shinkai is one of the best Ichiran managers in Japan. In his restaurant, the service is con-

siderate and warm. He thinks that a sincerely enthusiastic service will let people feel as comfort-

able as eating at home. Therefore, he pays more attention to meet the needs of customers, and he is willing to provide a warm and fragrant dining environment for each diner.

 WHAT I LEARNED

( Provide an Individual Space For Each Solo Diner )

( Provide An Attentive Service )

( Meet Customer's Needs as Much as Possible )

PRIVATE SPACE will be provided a personal area for each solo diners, and people would be able to use this area to do what they want, and no one will bother them. Moreover, if people dine in a quiet environment, and the temperature of the restaurant is warm, it will make solo diners feel more comfortable and relaxed. In addition, satisficing the needs of customers is the most important part of dining because it will affect people's emotions directly in the first place. Therefore, if restaurant owners could provide an INDIVIDUAL SERVICE, which will meet the needs of solo diners, they will be easy to feel more convenient and cozy while they are eating alone.

DINING ALONE SYSTEM
—DINING ALONE TABLE SURFACE & LEG ( PART ONE )

After the field trip, the dining alone system needs to be included a dining alone TABLE and a dining alone SPACE. At the same time, I will consider about EMOTION DESIGN so that it would be able to solve LONELINESS and EMBARRASSMENT of solo diners.

 ( User Testing 1 )

Testing people's dining habits to see how they set up their dishes, and where their arms are used to put on the table so that it can define the range of people's ARM MOVEMENTS and figure out the TABLE SIZE as well.

 ( ANTHROPOMETRIC CHART—TOP VIEW )

( Based on The User Testing 1 )

NORMAL REACH AREA: Radius = 8.5 in - 9.5 in

MAXIMUM REACH AREA: Radius = 18 in - 20.5 in

OCCASIONAL REACH AREA: Radius = 24 in - 27 in

 ( ANTHROPOMETRIC CHART—SIDE VIEW )

( Based on The User Testing 1 )

NORMAL REACH AREA: Radius = 10 in

MAXIMUM REACH AREA: Radius = 30 in

 ( User Testing 2 )

Based on the data from the anthropometric chart. I made some table surfaces with various shapes

to define the FINAL SIZE of the table, and figure out its BASIC SHAPE. Also, DIFFERENT SHAPES of the table will let people have VARIOUS FEELINGS when they dine alone.

( Final Dining Alone Table Surface)

Most people prefer the table surface with CURVEY LINES because the size is better for people who eat on their own. Moreover, the curvey line would be able to let people feel that they are surrounded by the table surface. Being surrounded will give people A SENSE OF SECURITY so that it can reduce their embarrassment and loneliness feeling when they eat alone.

( Bottom width: 30 in )

( Top width: 34 in )

( Length: 24 in )

 ( User Testing 3 )

( Serving A Pair of Diners )

For this shape of the dining alone table surface, people think the WAVY LINE will let them feel more RELAXED, and they are easy to be ATTRACTED by it. At the same time, the shape looks interesting, which will let them IGNORE some BAD feelings easily. Moreover, when it combines together to SERVE A PAIR OF DINERS, the distance between each diner is not too far away, so they still can be easy to make a conversation.

DINING ALONE SYSTEM
—CULTURAL ELEMENTS ( PART TWO )

Chinese food includes EIGHT REGIONAL CUISINES, which are SHANDONG cuisine, ZHEJIANG cuisine, ANHUI cuisine, JIANGSU cuisine, SICHUAN cuisine, HUNAN cuisine, FUJIAN cuisine, and GUANGDONG cuisine. Each Chinese restaurant usually focuses on a regional cuisine. Each cuisine is INFLUENCED

by its CULTURE.

 ( Shandong & Zhejiang Cuisine )

 ( Anhui & Jiangsu Cuisine )

 ( Sichuan & Hunan Cuisine )

 ( Fujian & Guangdong Cuisine )

When Chinese people miss home, they prefer to find food from their hometown in a restaurant, so when they eat alone there, they will get homesick easily.

( which means if people who live alone in an unfamiliar city, they have to access to the culture that is from the city. At this time, some of them may miss home easily. )

 ( Have )

Different Cuisines

Their Own Culture

 ( Involve )

Disparate Cultures

Various Elements

 ( Influence )

Different Cultures

People's Character

Therefore, I decided to pay attention to combine the CULTURE ELEMENTS of Chinese EIGHT regional CUISINES to my design concept so that it will RELIEF solo diners' HOMESICKNESS.

The most representative of these cultures is ARCHITECTURE.

 ( Cultural Elements )

 ( Further Mockup & User Testing )

_ Most people like the TABLE SURFACE because the shape and the low partitions will let them feel a sense of SECURITY and PRIVACY. It will also let people have a feeling of being PROTECTED.

_ Most people like the CULTURAL ELEMENTS and the Chinese pattern because it will let them feel FAMILIAR.

_ However, the STRUCTURE of the table leg needs to be improved because it is NOT STRONG enough, and it is NOT STABLE.

_ Some people think the CURTAIN will be easy to get DIRTY, and it is too high for dining, so it will let people feel STUFFY while eating.

_ Most people think the SCREEN is NOT NECESSARY for solo diners because the screen is for public use, and it is UNSAFE for users' privacy. They prefer to use their phones while eating.

Different cultures have their own architectural styles and cultural elements. Therefore, I picked some famous architectures from each culture of cuisines to do my design.

( Shandong & Zhejiang Representative Cultural Elements )

( Anhui & Jiangsu Representative Cultural Elements )

( Sichuan & Hunan Representative Cultural Elements )

( Fujian & Guangdong Representative Cultural Elements )

There are several options for restaurant owners choosing.

Eight different styles of dining alone tables that are
from Chinese eight regional cuisines.

( The Cultural Features of Chinese Eight Regional Cuisines )

[ Anhui Cultural Feature ]
In ancient times, Anhui merchants are very famous because they are integrity, smart, and kind. Also, their characters were affected by their architecture, so Anhui architecture is always used
STRAIGHT LINES and hard walls to be built.

[ Fujian Cultural Feature ]
Fujian national minority usually uses a
CYLINDER SHAPE to
build their house. It can hold hundreds of people. They design this architecture in order to resist the aggression of others. It is also used to defend the earthquake and the fire easily.

[ Guangdong Cultural Feature ]
In ancient times, nobilities, rich men, and officers usually live in this house because the shape of the roof is similar to
CHINESE OFFICERS' HAT. Cantonese use this style of the
house to represent riches and honor.

[ Hunan Cultural Feature ]

Hunan includes various national minorities. Because of its topography, Hunan people usually use BAMBOO to lay the foundations so that it can not only RISE their houses UP, but also easy to live near rivers or on mountains.

[ Jiangsu Cultural Feature ]

In Jiangsu, Suzhou Traditional Garden is famous. Artisans used various plants and architecture to build it. They used CURVEY LINES and the skill called “borrowed scenery” to represent the elegance of the Yangtze River Delta.

[ Shandong Cultural Feature ]

The wall of this house is made by using different stones. Shandong is in the north of China, so most people in there are more forthright. The buildings are affected by their characters which are SIMPLE and a little bit TOUGH.

[ Sichuan Cultural Feature ]

People in Sichuan usually use LARGE INCLINED housetops and wood stick LAYER BY LAYER to build their house because they live in a huge basin. The climate in Sichuan is wet all year round, people can use this building structure to resist rain.

[ Zhejiang Cultural Feature ]

The weather in Zhejiang is humid. Zhejiang people usually live in a TWO-STORY HOUSE because they can live on the second floor, and use the first floor to do business, such as opening a restaurant, a clothing store, a tea house, and so on.
